Legal Aid is an important part of New Zealand's justice system. It helps people to resolve legal problems that may go to court and makes sure that people are not denied justice because they can't afford a lawyer – Ministry of Justice (NZ).

The adversarial system can work against persons with no funds,  yet every person has the right to the same degree of professional help, which is why Legal Aid exists.

The authorities have investigators, specialists, almost unlimited resources and run a well-oiled machine, most times. But they do get it wrong, they can become biased, they can refuse to admit failings at times and are often accused of trying to stymie a defence.
